Harmonic Synergy
In surgery, the loss of blood often represents a limiting factor. It weakens the patient when he undergoes an operation and, as a consequence, slows down afterwards the rehabilitation and recuperation process. As a matter of course bleeding can unfortunately not be prevented. During a surgical intervention various methods to stop bleeding are at the disposal of the surgeon. On the one side a bleeding blood vessel can be ligated, i.e., it will be occluded by a thread. On the other side a blood vessel can be coagulated with electricity, i.e., it will be “charred”.
Since many years already we have been working with Harmonic Synergy, a device offering minimal tissue damage.We use an ultrasonic knife which simultaneously cuts and coagulates (seals) the blood vessels so that a bleeding can be prevented from the very beginning. Such interventions are being made under very low temperature for the purpose of excluding to the greatest extent possible a damage of the tissues. In turn, this results in less burning, or charring, of the tissue compared to electrocautery.
How does surgery work with Harmonic Synergy?
Electric energy is transformed into mechanic energy by a generator. In the course of this process some sort of ultra waves are produced which oscillate the knife. When the blade touches under light pressure the tissues then the blood vessels will be made desolate and the tissues are cut simultaneously. This method is characterized by a combination of pressure and vibration. The desolate making of the blood vessels is caused by the destruction of the protein in the tissues. As a result of this a clot originates which occludes the blood vessels. The surgeon has the possibility to adjust individually the pressure and to control precisely the effectiveness of the Harmonic Synergy by an accurate handling of the blade. This procedure guarantees a minimal and conservative loss of blood.
Harmonic Synergy is very advantageous particularly in minimal invasive surgery (i.e. MicroHip) where bleedings unnecessarily complicate interventions in an already limited operation range and, therefore, may provoke additional complications.
Advantages at a glance
- Cutting and making desolate the blood vessels in one and the same step;
- Precise cutting with minimal thermal damage allows for safer dissection near vital structures (i.e. nerves);
- No electricity passes to or through the body;
- Minimal risk exists for patients.
In summary, we can, therefore, say that the working with Harmonic Synergy offers manifold advantages for the patients as well as for the surgeon, a fact which has persuaded us to use this method whenever possible, i.e., in the majority of our surgeries.
