Patients are referred to the OZM Team by their primary care physicians who have diagnosed them with an injury or disease of their musculoskeletal system. Thus the referral from the primary care physician is very important as they know their patients much better than the OZM physicians can do, who, generally speaking, only make single “repairs” and then refer the patient back to the primary care physician for further treatment.

The OZM conducts special examinations to confirm the diagnosis which are then used as a basis for proposing a plan of treatment. The X-ray is a key diagnostic instrument for us which is why the OZM has its own bone X-ray system operated by three highly qualified medical X-ray specialists.

The treatment plan often involves an operation about which patients will be fully informed beforehand and – when they have given their consent – will then be organised by the hospital in collaboration with the primary care physician. The OZM physicians conduct the operation in the operating theatres of Münsingen hospital and supervise the care of the patient who has been operated on in the hospital’s orthopaedic department. This also includes preparation and organisation of out-patient treatment and aftercare when the patient has been discharged (physiotherapy, SPITEX Bern nursing care at home, follow-ups).

Together with our colleagues in the surgical department, we also ensure a 24/7 emergency service enabling high quality treatment of the whole range of injuries to the musculoskeletal system.
