Elbow Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis)

Olecranon bursitis is an inflammation of the small sac of fluid (bursa) located at the tip of the elbow. This painful condition may be caused by injury, chronic irritation (student's elbow, constantly placing the elbows on a hard surface), or infection. Symptoms include swelling, redness, accumulation of fluid (effusion), and burning pain. The bony structures of the elbow joint itself are not affected.

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis of olecranon bursitis is usually obvious on clinical examination. However, an X-ray may be obtained to rule out bony injury.

Treatment:

As a rule, conservative treatment is attempted first. Conservative treatment consists mainly of resting the affected elbow and, naturally, of avoiding the activity causing the bursitis. Ultrasound treatments can be helpful. Last but not least, medications to reduce pain and inflammation are essential. If all conservative measures fail to relieve the symptoms, then surgical treatment can be considered. Surgery consists of removal of the olecranon bursa (sac) through a small incision under local anaesthesia in a procedure referred to as bursectomy.
