The shoulder is made up of the shoulder blade (scapula), the collarbone (clavicle), the main shoulder joint and smaller joints as well as muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Unlike other joints (e.g. the hip), the shoulder is stabilized mainly by muscles. This makes the shoulder more mobile, but also less stable than joints stabilized by ligaments. Although this configuration makes the shoulder the most mobile joint in the human musculoskeletal system, shoulder injuries and disorders such as shoulder pain, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder dislocation frequently occur. |
